忙しかったり疲れていたり

　そんなわけで、ずいぶん間が開いてしまった。

[ミステリ] サルバドールの復活 / ジェレミー・ドロンフィールド

　上下各400ページを超す大作。上巻300ページを過ぎても、話がどっちに転がってゆくのかまったく見えないところは前作『飛蝗の農場』[amazon.co.jp] にも通じる。とはいえお話自体はアレに比べるとずいぶんまっとうなつくりだ（あくまでもアレに比べると、だ）。

　支配的な母によって、クラシック一辺倒の環境で育てられた天才的ギタリスト（東欧の音楽家に「君はギタリストなのにエリック・クラプトンを知らないのか！　でもジミ・ヘンドリックスは知ってるだろ？」「それ誰だい？」なんて愉快なやりとりがある）と、彼の周囲の女性たちの物語。

　母親の人物像が強烈で、ロス・マクドナルドを思い浮かべてしまった。凄まじいクライマックスの光景を支えているのも、ロス・マクドナルドとか、あるいは法月綸太郎なんかが描きそうな心情である。

　長いだけあって、脇役についてもしっかり描き込まれている。パソコンに向かうとついゲームを始めてしまって全然原稿が書けない自称小説家なんて、とても他人事とは思えない。

　ともあれ、10日くらいかけて読んだせいか、じっくり楽しむことができた。前作が気気に入った人にはもちろん、気に入らなかった人にも、ドロンフィールドなんて知らない人にもおすすめ。長いだけのことはある。
